Home grown vs. store bought weed: Which is a better deal?
High-quality marijuana doesn’t come cheap. And for that reason, many people who regularly consume marijuana may have considered growing their own cannabis at home as a method for saving money. But is home cultivation really a practical way to save cash?
Leafly recently published a comprehensive guide to the costs and benefits of home cultivation, which comes to the conclusion that, yes, growing your own cannabis can save money. But it’s not quite that simple.
There are a number of factors to consider when weighing the pros and cons of home cultivation, such as time commitment, labor costs, viable growing locations, length of harvest and more.
Based on average prices in legal markets, which currently include Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska, store-bought cannabis can cost anywhere from $10 to $20 per gram, $30 to $60 per 1/8 ounce, and $175 to $360 per ounce.
The costs of growing your own cannabis at home can vary depending on the size and location of the grow. The price per gram is generally lower for larger yields and outdoor crops.
For example, growing 4,000 grams outdoors will translate to about $1.30 per gram, including labor costs. Whereas, growing 200 grams indoors (in a 2-by-2 inch space) will translate to about $9.60 per gram, including labor.
Growing a plant or two casually in your yard can be much less expensive, but you’re more likely to run into issues like pests and mold.
It’s not that hard to grow marijuana, “as long as you put enough time and effort into your hobby,” according to Robert Bergman, author of “The Grow Bible.”
“But, you really have to tend to your plants and make sure they’re happy, so to speak,” he says. “With spending only a few hours per week, you can produce some fantastic results.”
