Canada’s Liberal Party will announce legislation next month to legalize marijuana nationwide by July 1, 2018, CBC News reports.

The legislation is expected to be announced the week of April 10 and is anticipated to fall in line with recommendations released in December 2016 from Canada’s marijuana legalization task force.

According CBC News, the legislation will task Canada’s federal government with the role of overseeing the safety and security of the country’s marijuana supply, and Ottawa will license cannabis producers.

Provinces will have the right to determine how marijuana will be distributed and sold within their jurisdictions. Ottawa legislators are setting a minimum age of 18 for marijuana purchase, in line with recommendations from the task force appointed by Justin Trudeau.

Provinces may set higher age limits if they want, however.

The new legislation will also allow Canadian adults to grow up to four cannabis plants per household, CBC News reports.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party campaigned in 2015 on the platform of marijuana legalization, pledging to introduce legislation by the spring of 2017 to legalize adult use of the drug nationwide – a pledge Trudeau’s government appears to be making good on.

“There are billions upon billions of dollars flowing into the pockets of organized crime, street gangs and gun-runners, because of the illicit marijuana trade, and if we can get that out of the criminal elements and into a more regulated fashion we will reduce the amount of criminal activity that’s profiting from those, and that has offshoots into so many other criminal activities,” Trudeau said in 2016, underscoring his support for legalizing cannabis and bringing activities associated with marijuana above ground, as reported by The Washington Post.
